Analysis of the environmental performance of the European Parliament (2019-2024)

On the eve of the European elections on June 6-9, 2024, BLOOM unveils an unprecedented comprehensive analysis: an in-depth and detailed review of the environmental performance of the political groups and national delegation present in the European Parliament during the 2019-2024 term. We surveyed the votes of the 853 MEPs who have sat in the European Parliament over the past five years on 150 crucial votes around four themes: preserving the ocean and small-scale fisheries, combating climate change, protecting biodiversity and sustainable agriculture and, finally, promoting environmental justice and rights. These votes cover a wide variety of texts such as regulations, directives, motions for resolutions etc. Who really stood up for the protection of nature in Parliament?

150 VOTES FOR THE OCEAN, CLIMATE, BIODIVERSITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

OCEAN

The protection of the oceans, of marine biodiversity and artisanal fishers, as well as the fight against destructive fishing activities and all other forms of unsustainable exploitation of marine resources. Two examples of subjects considered in this category: the call for a moratorium on deep sea mining and the reform of fisheries control regulations;

CLIMATE

The fight against climate change, promoting the European Union's energy transition, a sustainable transport system and the EU sustainable energy strategy. An example of subject belonging to this category: the regulation of CO2 emission performance standards for new vehicles;

BIODIVERSITY

The preservation of biodiversity and terrestrial habitats, as well as the promotion of a sustainable agriculture with a low intake of pesticides. Votes on the ban of specific classes of pesticides or amendments modifying the Common Agricultural Policy are examples of subjects belonging to this category;

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

The promotion of environmental justice, the defense of citizens' civil and environmental rights, and the legal accountability of businesses for the impact of their activities on the environment. As an example, some votes on the European Corporate sustainability due diligence directive have been considered in this category.

OUR 15 POINTS TO SAVE THE OCEAN, CLIMATE AND LIVELIHOODS

The situation on the horizon is ominous, with polls predicting an escalation of far-right parties and a major regression in the number of seats of the most eco-responsible groups.

But polls remain polls, the outcome of June elections is still all in play, and its outcome may look quite different. To help voters know the candidates and their commitment for the next term, BLOOM also developed a list of 15 points for future MEPs to save the ocean, climate and livelihoods. We asked candidates from the major European parties to sign a commitment to work toward these 15 points based on science and respect for ecological and social justice.

Full details of our 15 points and the list of candidates who have signed them can be found on our website. The next five years cannot be wasted.

BLOOM thanks the following NGOs for their exchanges during the conception of this analysis: Oceana, Réseau Action Climat France and Seas At Risk.
